FF2® is a premium aluminium façade sheet that combines outstanding aesthetics with safety (A1 – non-combustible) and sustainability. Its high-quality UV-resistant coating meets the highest RUV-4 classification (DIN EN 1396) and delivers long-lasting colour brilliance: fading and chalking are a thing of the past. FF2® also offers significant environmental benefits. Its highly durable surface helps reduce maintenance requirements and extend refurbishment cycles. Thanks to its specially developed alloy technology, FF2® can achieve the same spans as conventional 3 mm façade sheets made from AlMg1 (EN AW 5005) with a material thickness of just 2 mm. This means one-third less aluminium by weight compared with a 3 mm 5005 sheet. And because aluminium remains fully recyclable, FF2® can be recycled again and again.

10 standard colours are available from stock, complemented by a regularly changing FF2® seasonal stock range with additional colours. For individual projects, the choice is virtually unlimited: RAL, RAL Design and NCS colours, as well as customised effect and decorative finishes, are available subject to minimum order quantities. Metallic colours change their appearance depending on the light and viewing angle, giving large façade surfaces particular depth and visual vibrancy. Decorative finishes can reproduce the appearance of wood, natural stone, copper, Corten steel or stainless steel, combining distinctive aesthetics with the advantages of a lightweight and durable aluminium façade. Metallic colours and decorative finishes must be installed in the specified rolling direction to ensure a consistent overall appearance.

Durable and colour-stable
The FF2® coating is applied using an industrial coil-coating process. The aluminium is continuously pre-treated, coated and cured. Unlike post-coating finished façade elements, this process creates a uniform, consistently reproducible surface across the entire façade. FF2® is available exclusively with high-quality UV-resistant coating systems meeting the highest RUV-4 classification according to EN 1396 (except self-weathering clear coat). Their high resistance to UV radiation, weathering and gloss loss ensures stable colour appearance over the long term – even on large façades exposed to intensive weathering. The surface is also dirt-repellent and easy to clean. This reduces maintenance requirements and helps preserve the high-quality appearance of the building over many years.
Factory-coated rather than post-coated
One of the key advantages of FF2® is when the coating is applied. The aluminium is coated by the manufacturer and delivered to the façade contractor already finished with its final coating. The coated sheets can then be fabricated into façade elements such as cassettes, panels and folded components. A robust protective film protects the visible surface from scratches and other damage during fabrication. With a conventional solution, mill finish aluminium is first formed into cassettes, panels or folded components. The semi-finished components then have to be prepared for coating and transported to the coating company – and subsequently transported back to the façade contractor or construction site. With FF2®, this additional process is eliminated: No preparation of formed components for the coater. No return transport. No additional waiting times, coating costs or transport costs. The industrial production process also makes FF2® economically attractive. Despite its high-quality UV-resistant coating, a finished FF2® façade element is generally comparable in price to a 3 mm 5005 (AlMg1) component that is coated after fabrication.

FF2® uses a modified EN AW 5754 (AlMg3) alloy specifically developed for façade applications. With a tensile strength (Rm) of 220–260 MPa and a yield strength (Rp0,2) of 165–215 MPa, FF2® offers significantly higher mechanical values than the widely used EN AW 5005 (AlMg1). This makes it possible, in many applications, to use 2 mm FF2® where 3 mm 5005 would traditionally be required – with comparable spans. The result is a significantly lower weight: FF2®: approx. 5.4 kg/m². 3 mm EN AW 5005: approx. 8.1 kg/m². Two practical examples illustrate the difference:
- For a 5 m² façade element, the weight is reduced by approximately 13.5 kg.
- For 1,500 m² of façade area, approximately 4,050 kg of aluminium can be saved.
Less material means less weight during fabrication, transport and installation. The FF2® alloy is also seawater-resistant and corrosion-resistant, making it suitable for façades in coastal areas and other demanding environments.

Saving aluminium, extending façade service life
FF2® combines several aspects of sustainability, starting with the material itself. The specially developed recycling alloy contains at least 70% recycled aluminium. At the same time, using FF2® instead of 3 mm 5005 (AlMg1) reduces aluminium consumption by approximately one third. The coating contributes to the long service life of the façade. Its high UV and weather resistance helps maintain a high-quality surface over many years and can therefore reduce maintenance requirements and extend refurbishment cycles. The coating system is PFAS-free. The industrial coating process uses a closed system in which solvents are captured, extracted and recovered on site. The heat generated during this process is reused for the curing process.
At the end of its long service life, the material remains valuable: FF2® aluminium can be fully recycled, again and again.
FF2® therefore saves aluminium at the outset, extends the service life of the façade surface and keeps the material within the recycling loop for future generations of products.

There are two different applications when bonding FF2® façade elements: Structural bonding without additional mechanical fixing and bonding of stiffeners to the rear of the façade element
This involves a load-bearing adhesive connection for fixing certain generally building-authority-approved or standardised façade sheets to aluminium substructure profiles in ventilated rainscreen façades. Novelis FF2® is an approved façade sheet specifically designed for this application. Its approval includes, among other things, the special epoxy-resin-based rear coating, which is part of the approved system.
For structural bonding, the substructure profiles must be arranged so that moisture cannot accumulate in the bonding area. This normally corresponds to a vertical arrangement. Diagonal bonding is theoretically also possible. For horizontal bonding of flat-sheet façades, the design should be discussed with the responsible structural engineer.
The adhesive connection consists of a 3 mm spacer tape and an adhesive based on PUR or MS polymer. Because the adhesive itself has a flammability classification, structurally bonded façades are classified as normally flammable, even though the Novelis FF2® façade sheet itself meets A1 – non-combustible as a cladding element.
The maximum installation height for structural bonding is determined by the applicable fire classification and the permitted installation conditions under the relevant building regulations. In Germany, this generally applies up to the high-rise threshold, where the floor level of at least one occupied room is more than 22 m above the defined ground level.
Specialist contractors wishing to carry out structural bonding must provide evidence of their suitability through a recognised testing body. This requires a sample bonded connection using approved façade sheets (Novelis FF2®) on an aluminium substructure. The suitability certificate is issued for five years and can subsequently be extended for further five-year periods, provided the responsible qualified personnel have carried out several bonding applications during the preceding period. If no bonding work has been carried out, the suitability tests must be repeated.
The bonding process must be documented for the project, including the adhesive batch number, air temperature and humidity. A completed and signed form provided by the contractor must be handed over to the client as evidence of compliance.

Bonding stiffeners to the rear of FF2® façade elements involves auxiliary components that may be required in cassettes, panels and special constructions. They are generally used to reduce potential loads and deflection in the face sheet of the façade element under wind load.
Stiffeners should normally be bonded transversely to the main axis of the element, i.e. parallel to the shorter edge.
Stiffeners can be made from Novelis FF2® – for example, from offcuts – or from extruded aluminium profiles made of EN AW 6060 or EN AW 6063.
When using FF2® offcuts, the connection must always be made rear side to rear side, as specified for the application. Extruded profiles may require priming.
For vertically installed façade elements, stiffeners are generally designed as horizontal L-, U- or omega profiles.
For horizontally installed façade elements, stiffeners may need to be designed with brackets that can be suspended into the corresponding substructure.
In all cases, the loads acting on the stiffener must also be transferred into the substructure. This prevents excessive stress concentrations at the transverse edges of the façade elements.
The technical application of bonded stiffeners has been tested by the Institute for Building Materials and Materials Testing at the University of Hanover. No building-authority approval is required for this application.
As stiffeners are auxiliary components and do not have a load-bearing function, they are considered secondary components and do not affect the fire classification of the façade.

The two applications involve different requirements for the adhesive and the qualified personnel carrying out the work. For both applications, the adhesive specified parameters must be observed:
- During bonding, the air temperature must be between +5°C and +35°C.
- The temperature of the components must be at least 5°C above the dew point temperature of the air.
- For structural bonding, relative humidity must not exceed 75%. Some adhesives used for stiffeners permit relative humidity of up to 90%.
- For five hours after bonding, the air temperature must not fall below +5°C, as otherwise the adhesive may not cure correctly on the façade sheet or substructure.

- Less Weight. Easier Handling.
At 5.4 kg/m², FF2® is significantly lighter than a 3 mm 5005 sheet. The lower weight makes a noticeable difference during manual handling: FF2® sheets are easier to load onto, move across and remove from fabrication machines. Larger cassettes and folded components are also easier to handle. The rear side is designed for efficient processing as well. The standard adhesive primer, which also serves as a protective coating, significantly reduces friction, allowing FF2® sheets to slide much more easily than mill finish aluminium across the support surfaces of fabrication machines. On site, the low weight of FF2® also reduces the physical effort required to carry and install finished façade elements.
- Fabrication with the coating in place
FF2® is cut, punched, milled and bent with its factory-applied coating already in place. The minimum inside bend radius is 2.5T and the minimum processing temperature is 20°C. The cut edges of the 2 mm FF2® sheet remain bright aluminium and stay free of coating. With proper fabrication, coating creep, flaking and delamination at the cut edges are avoided. For metallic and decorative finishes, a consistent installation direction must be maintained. FF2® sheets can be used to create the complete building envelope: the main façade in the form of hook-on cassettes, panels, flat sheets or individually folded elements, as well as window sills, reveals, roller shutter boxes, internal and external corners, parapets, decorative perforations and applications such as concealed doors and gates. No additional coating step is required after fabrication. The factory-applied coating does more than eliminate one additional production step – it changes the entire workflow. With post-coating, fully formed components have to be packaged, transported, unpacked, individually coated and transported back again. FF2®, by contrast, arrives at the façade contractor flat, fully coated and ready for fabrication. The result is less logistics, less handling, less coordination and shorter waiting times.
- Protective film for workshop fabrication …
During fabrication, a robust, UV-resistant black-and-white protective film shields the visible surface of FF2® from scratches and other damage. The film is printed with directional arrows. These help ensure the correct orientation of the sheets and are particularly useful with metallic, effect and decorative finishes, where maintaining a consistent installation direction is essential for a uniform appearance.
- … and for up to six months on the façade
A particular advantage becomes apparent on site: the protective film can remain on installed FF2® elements for up to six months and can be exposed to UV radiation throughout this period. There is therefore no need to remove the film immediately after installation. Construction of the façade can continue while already installed areas remain protected. The film is removed only once work on and around the façade has been completed. This reduces the risk of finished façade elements being damaged during subsequent construction work – and gives the façade contractor greater flexibility when organising the construction sequence.
